Neurology
Mat-Su Regional Medical Center offers a broad range of services for the brain and conditions of the nervous system, such as epilepsy. Care includes advanced treatment, rehabilitation and recovery services, and extensive diagnostic capabilities ranging from MRI to VEEG.
EEG
The wellbeing of the nervous system is a very important part of the body’s overall health. The professionals at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center use an EEG (electroencephalogram) to assess the electrical signals of the brain through sensors attached to various points of a patient’s head. The results can be used to monitor and diagnose conditions such as epileptic seizure, coma, dizziness, dementia and other altered mental status changes.
VEEG
A VEEG (video electroencephalogram) is an EEG that is done in an inpatient setting and the monitoring process can take anywhere from three to five days. Mat-Su Regional Medical Center is the only facility in the state of Alaska to offer inpatient VEEG monitoring and healthcare professionals can conduct the procedure on adults and children ages 6 and older.
In some instances of epilepsy, seizure or pseudo seizure, a physician may need further clarification on why a patient is not responding to their medications or they may want to rule out other diagnoses if the case is somewhat unclear. The VEEG is the tool they would use to help shed light on the origins of the problem. During a VEEG, constant monitoring of the patient is required so that the physician is able to see the activity in a patient’s brain during a seizure or other similar episode. Here at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, we offer around-the-clock monitoring by an EEG technician as well as nursing staff coverage during a patient’s VEEG to help make sure the study is conducted in a safe way.
