Mat-Su Regional Medical Center Delivering Quality Care and More to the Mat-Su Borough

Total Community Benefit Exceeded $164 million in 2024
Palmer, Alaska – Mat-Su Regional Medical Center provided care to thousands of area residents in 2024, with more than 197,000 patient encounters across its network of physician clinics and other outpatient sites of care. In addition to delivering safe, quality, compassionate healthcare, the health system is helping those in need, supporting charitable organizations and contributing to the area economy. In its most recent Community Benefit Report, Mat-Su Regional’s impact totaled more than $164 million in 2024.
Mat-Su Regional’s emergency room provides lifesaving, medically necessary care at more than 38,000 patient encounters each year, treating all patients regardless of their ability to pay. In 2024, the hospital provided more than $19 million in charity and uncompensated care and provided resources to help patients in need of secure medications and medical support devices.
Mat-Su Regional recently earned designation as a Level III Trauma Center, the only hospital in Alaska with the distinction. The hospital has demonstrated an ability to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care and stabilization of injured patients and emergency operations, with a dedicated trauma team trained to handle a wide range of critical injuries here in the community.
“Our work to grow and enhance the medical services we provide is ongoing, as we continuously improve our safety and quality and support access to healthcare for our community,” said James Bunch, interim chief executive officer of Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. “From providing care to our most vulnerable residents to supporting local charitable organizations, we are proud to make an impact on the health, well-being and quality of life in our Mat-Su Valley.”
The health system and its employees also support local organizations that make a difference, especially those addressing social determinants of health. Through service projects such as the annual Jars of Love Peanut Butter drive for MatSu Food Bank and contributions to charitable organizations such as MyHouse and The Children’s Place, Mat-Su Regional gives back to the community throughout the year.
To enhance patient care and expand healthcare access, Mat-Su Regional is investing in medical services, facilities and technologies. Capital projects in 2024 totaled $3 million and included a second cardiac catheterization suite and new imaging technology. This second suite increases capacity and supports delivery of more advanced cardiovascular services, diagnostic imaging for vascular care and interventional radiology.
Successful recruitment in 2024 brought 17 new providers to Mat-Su Regional, including specialists in orthopedic spine, interventional cardiology, wound care, gastroenterology, interventional radiology, primary care and behavioral health.
“We are strategically applying our resources to help area residents have access to the care they need close to home,” said Bunch. “These investments, along with our outstanding medical staff and employees, support our delivery of high quality medical care and services for a positive patient experience.”
Mat-Su Regional Medical Center is one of the community’s larger employers with a payroll of approximately $126 million. Support for the healthcare workforce includes training the next generation of medical professionals to meet our evolving healthcare needs. With over 500 medical and allied health students last year, Mat-Su Regional is making significant investments in the future of the healthcare workforce.
In addition to supporting the local economy through job creation, Mat-Su Regional Medical Center paid $1.8 million in taxes in 2024, monies that support local infrastructure and civic resources.
